The Association between Depressive Symptoms and Cognitive Functioning in Middle-aged and Older Adults : Focused on the Effects of the Retirement and Bereavement Factors

Abstract
The purpose of the current study was to investigate 1) the relationship between depressive symptoms and cognitive functioning and 2) the interaction effects of retirement and bereavement factors on the relationship between depressive symptoms and cognitive functioning in middle-aged and older adults. This study utilized the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging from the Korea Labor Institute, and the analysis for the research questions was performed by hierarchical multiful regression. The results showed that depressive symptoms, retirement factor and bereavement factor at time 1 were negatively related to the cognitive functioning at time 3. Also, The findings indicated the interaction effects of retirement factor and bereavement factor on the association between depressive symptoms and cognitive functioning. Among the controls, cognitive functioning at time 1, age, education level, sex were related to the later cognitive functioning longitudinally. Based on these findings, implication for theory and practice were discussed.
